Bill Mayclin receives Leadership and Service Award on March 9th at the 2018 NW ACDA conference, Portland

Past-President Patrick Ryan presided over the presentation of the NW ACDA's highest award, the Leadership and Service Award, at Friday night's concert, March 9, 2018, during the NW region's conference held in Portland.

"This year's Leadership and Service Award goes to William F. Mayclin of Pendleton, Oregon," Patrick announced , after telling of Bill's enormous contributions to ACDA and to the choral art.

Bill, who remains active as a conductor and performer, could not be in Portland to accept the award. He was "playing the role of the devil" in what he described as "a devillishly successful endeavor" in a Pendleton Oregon East Symphony production of Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat. A long-time friend who teaches at Portland State University, Debbie Glaze, accepted the award on Bill's behalf.

Bill's comments

"I was completely surprised to learn from Patrick that I had been selected for the Leadership and Service Award. I am truly grateful and sincerely humbled to be the recipient of the award, because I well know how many wonderful choral directors in our region are deserving of this honor. ACDA is such a fantastic organization, and I have been privileged and blessed to have had the opportunity to serve ACDA at the state, regional and national levels. I hope to remain a part of this choral community for the rest of my life."

Bill taught choral music at Pendleton High School and Pendleton Junior High for thirty years, retiring from that role in 2002. His high school choirs sang at two divisional conventions of MENC and two state conventions of the Oregon Music Educators Association. Groups directed by Bill also sang a Expo '74 in Spokane and Expo '86 in Vancouver, B. C.

His educational background includes an Associate of Arts degree from Clark College, Vancouver, in 1969, and a BM in Music from the University of Portland in 1971, graduating "Maxima Cum Laude." He also holds a Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from Eastern Washington State College, 1973.
